Transit of Venus

The transit of Venus across the Sun as observed from Bodega Head and Sebastopol.  The photos are in chronological order from top left to bottom right, starting at 3:34 p.m. and ending at 7:21 p.m.  The top three were taken from Bodega Head, and the bottom three are from Sebastopol.

Venus is very small in these images (tough to photograph!), but you can watch it appear at the very top edge of the sun and cross towards the right hand edge.

Distance facts: Venus is about 67 million miles from the Sun, and about 26 million miles from Earth.

Observing a transit of Venus across the face of the Sun is a rare event the next one won't occur until 2117!

You get to see all these great things on the West Coast! New England was left out of this one. Thanks, Jackie!
